Campus Greens
Location: Macomb, Illinois
Number of current members: 20
Group Website:

Purpose Statement:

The Campus Greens group at Western Illinois is currently being rebuilt and is active with about 20 members. The group’s focus does not seem to be in any one specific area but has a political slant due to their affiliation with the Green Party. However, they explained that their hope would be to either create a partner group or to widen their range of issues in order to avoid alienating members who may not support all the political views of the Green Party.

Current Projects:

The most recent major activities of WIU’s Campus Greens was to work with their cafeteria food provider, Sodexho, to switch from Styrofoam to-go containers to more environmentally friendly and biodegradable containers. Approximately 3,000 Styrofoam containers were used daily at about $.10 each. The containers they switched too were 95%-100% biodegradable but costs $.35. Despite this, they company switched because the Campus Greens were able to raise support on campus. Also this fall, the group will represent the Green Party in a campus wide mock election. They will be provided the same amount of time to speak to the students as the two major parties. This provides the group with a forum to bring up issues to a large group of attending students. Also, in the spring, there will be a sustainable energy fee proposal for students to vote on..
