About KARES

KARES (Knox Advocates for Recycling and Environmental Support) is a group that, as its name implies, cares about the environment. KARES seeks to promote education and support of environmentally-friendly practices through events like hosting speakers.  In 2002, KARES helped sponsor a talk by environmentalist and author Julia Butterfly Hill, famed for living in a tree to protect it from logging.  The club also hosts events like Earth Day celebrations and spring gardening.

Purpose:

KARES works to encourage recycling on campus in various ways. It directs the recycling program on campus and provides recycled school materials and rentable bicycles. The club also works to educate students about various environmental issues (including pollution, drug testing on animals and city sprawl). Sometimes getting involved at a larger level, students travel to Chicago to participate in environmental community services, or to start letter-writing campaigns.

Knox Sustainability

Over the last few years, Knox College emerged as a leader in the sustainability movement. President Roger Taylor signed the Talloires Declaration, committing the College to work within the institution and the community to increase sustainability efforts. So far, Knox has retrofitted several on-campus fixtures, increased heating and cooling efficiency, created a student green fee, among many other projects. To view all of Knox's progress, view the Sustainability Handbook!

In addition, President Taylor appointed a Sustainability Task Force, charged with the mission of assisting with the Knox College Strategic Plan.
