Environmental Club
![]() |
Location: Grayslake, Illinois
Number of current members: 15
Purpose Statement:
Our goal is to educate the community on environmental issues and to take the first step toward improving our relationship with our environment.
Congratulations!!! Members of the Environmental Club were successful in their diligent efforts to help pass the Lake County Forest Preserve Referendum. The newly-generated funds will total $185 million and will be used to acquire 2,500-3,000 acres, in addition to creating and expanding programs. Job well done!
Environmental Issues Addressed:
We are trying to inform people about global warming: what it is, what the consequences are, and what they can do about it. We also try to promote local farmers and environmentally friendly products and businesses.
Current Projects:
Waste Disposal: The Environmental Club is currently publicizing the collection of household chemical waste (HCW) at SWALCO. The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO), now has two methods for the public to dispose of HCW, including scheduled drop-off times at their Gurnee facility and at mobile events throughout Lake County.
Fundraising: What better way to raise money than to sell off unclaimed items in the lost and found???? Instead of letting the college toss these items in a landfill, the Environmental Club is going to host a Lost and Found Sale for 100% profit--making money from a recycling event!
Movie night: In the upcoming weeks, these environmentalists are going to head to a local movie theater to view the film "W." Reviews welcome!
Previous Projects:
• Members recently traveled to the Elawa Farm Wildlife Discovery Center.
• Members of the Environmental Club put their power to work for area Whooping Cranes. As volunteers of the ICF Whooping Crane Program, members helped with habitat restoration and breeding efforts.
• The E.C. was also instrumental in publishing a "Think Green" campus phone directory. The front and back covers are bright green and tells viewers to "Think Green"; the back cover also highlights green living tips and includes an advertisement for the group.
• Another movie event included the on-campus viewing of "An Inconvenient Truth."
