Mission Statement:
To work towards environmental preservation in a sustainable ecosystem, through education and non-violent action.
Purpose Statement:
Global Affect is an environmental organization that serves the Augustana campus and the Quad City community. In doing so, students gain the experience of working with faculty and staff from the college and people throughout the Quad City area. More specifically, the group focuses on: first, promoting environmental awareness and; second, having fun in the natural world.
Environmental Issues Addressed:
Promoting commingled and paper recycling, sponsoring campus and community clean-ups, conducting research into energy efficient and environmentally responsible architecture, and managing battery recycling. The college has engaged in an increased effort to recycle, especially with two staff dedicated to handling on-campus recycling last year, and we are excited to be a part of that effort!
Current Projects:
•
Project Pedal: This is an exciting project that Global Affect undertook this year and will grow in years to come.
This year they gave away 15 bicycles to incoming freshmen who signed a pledge agreeing not to bring their cars to campus in exchange for a bicycle. They had private funding to support 14 bicycles and the campus Physics Club financed the additional bike. Over 60 freshmen signed the pledge so they distributed the bikes in a first-signed-first-served manner. They are hoping to use Project Pedal to fundraise, receive grants, and work with the Student Government Association to provide at least 60 bikes for next year's incoming freshman class.
The main incentives of the project are threefold: to encourage fuel-free transportation; to foster an appreciation of the natural environment through recreation; and establish bike riding habits that will extend beyond students' 4 years on campus.
• From local farm to cafeteria: Global Affect is working with the Farm-to-Fork Committee on campus to bring produce, meat, and dairy to Augustana's dining services.
• Compost: Not only is Global Affect purchasing from local farmers, they are also setting up a compost system on campus to donate the waste to the local farmers from which they get their produce.
• On-campus farmers' market: As of September 25, 2008, Global Affect hosts a farmers' market every Thursday on campus.
• Farmer's Market Bike Ride: Every Saturday, Global Affect members meet on campus and bike to the local farmers' market. Everyone is welcome to participate in this event!
• Plastic petition: The group is distributing a petition to ban the on-campus sale of plastic water bottles, which will be replaced by aluminum bottles.
Previous Project:
• Furniture Donate & Swap: Last year, Global Affect organized a furniture donation and exchange event for the purpose of reducing the College's landfill impact.
